Town Hall Meeting Reflection
In class on the 16th and 18th of September, we had a town hall meeting and I learned many things about many people. This topic was about Pro and Anti- Slavery arguments. Figures such as Samuel Morris, Frederick Douglas, William Harper, William Lloyd Garrison, and many more participated in this town hall meeting argument.
I learned many things about these particular figures while viewing and paying attention in class. Samuel Morris, William Harper, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Clay were all Pro-Slavery.
Samuel Morris believed that slavery is perfectly run naturally through god, it should expand throughout the country, and that morality should not be associated with slavery.
William Harper believed that the south was saved by the slave trade and that we can advance as a nation if we keep slavery.
Thomas Jefferson has views from both sides because he grew up owning slaves from his father, he didn’t have much of a choice. However, generally, he was against slavery.
Henry Clay drove the public insane with slavery. He believed in state rights and federalism. He owned slaves but despised owning them. He only owned them to gain political power however he is still considered Pro-Slavery.
An important word that we learned as a class was manumission. Manumission is the release from slavery.
Some figures that were Anit-Slavery include Frederick Douglas, William Lloyd Garrison, and Harriet Tubman.
Frederick Douglas is a former slave. He was beaten to be put back in his place. And he believed that freedom makes people powerful.
William Lloyd Garrison wrote the liberator. He believed that the pigment of someone's skin has nothing to do with how they should be treated. He ended up being beaten badly in Boston for his beliefs.
Lastly, Harriet Tubman. She was born into slavery along with all of her siblings. She was ordered to get runaway slaves for her owners but she refused to do so. She saved over 300 slaves and spent her whole life trying to free them.
