The Underground Railroad was an organization of whites and blacks that assisted runaway slaves from the south to the north and it played a vital role in the anti-slave movement and though its original starting date is unclear, it assisted runaway slaves in the 18th century.
In class on 9/25, we were taught about many important events. These events included The Underground Railroad, Missouri Compromise, Fugitive Slave Act, Bleeding Kansas, Nat Turner, and the Mutiny on Amistad.
The Missouri Compromise was passed as the 24th state and north of Missouri's southern border was considered all free soil.
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850. This created the idea of bounty hunting and it was ruled that this act was unconstitutional (Wisconsin Supreme Court declared that).
Bleeding Kansas was also known as the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854. Anti-slavery citizens there made a government of their own because Kansas territory was declared a slave state. The Pro slavery government started to destroy towns and this resulted in violence. This created a mini civil war.
Nat Turner had the most lethal slave uprising. He stood for Anti-slavery and he was born into slavery. He had a big passion for Christianity. He also led a violent slave rebellion and he is most known for this. He killed 55 white people on his way to Jerusalem and was pursued by many bounty hunters. He ended up being defeated. He was then taken to a jail in Jerusalem and admitted to his actions. He didn't have much support in his trial which led to his punishment of the death sentence. Lastly, when he died, his body was used for cannibalism.
The last important event we learned about was the Mutiny on Amistad. This was a slave rebellion with 53 slaves. The slaves rebelled and killed the captain cook and everyone on board. The ship ended up being seized 2 months later by the U.S navy. As an end result, the U.S. and Spain debated the case until the American Civil war where the case was never concluded.
